Tesla S Electric Sedan Unveiled!

I’m not sure where companies like Tesla and Fisker are getting these great designs from, but keep them coming!
Tesla released their second electric car yesterday in the form of an electric 4 door sedan. Called the Model S Sedan, this beautiful car it built upon the chassis of what some speculate is actually a Mercedes C or E-class (due to the relationship Tesla has with Mercedes and the lack of money to actually design and build their own bespoke chassis). With a super sleek and sexy exterior, large trunk and amazingly simple cockpit, the Tesla Sedan is sure to strike all the right chords with enthusiasts. Whether the larger bodied car can live up to the hype on the environmental side, with sufficient range and power is another story.


Tesla says the car can hit 0-60 in 5.5 seconds and will have a range of around 300 miles. All of this at a price of around $50,000. Though the range is a bit short compared to other hybrid and small engined sedans from Volvo, BMW, Lexus and similar brands that have a $50,000 target price, Tesla is banking on the piece of mind that it gives people and the money it saves them at the pump will more than make up for its shortcomings.


How nice would it be to have an all Tesla garage? I wouldn’t mind two cars that perform like that and look like that!

New - 2010 Ford Taurus SHO - Bringing the Noise and the Funk!

It’s now official, the Ford Taurus SHO has returned to the roads of America! The twin-turbocharged V6 will put out 365HP (part of the new EcoBoost series engines) and will cost around $37,995. I guess this means Conan O’Brien can finally sell his old SHO and get a proper replacement. You can read more below via the official Ford Press Release:

The original Taurus SHO generated a loyal following of owners and enthusiasts, with an active club more than 1,000 members strong, an online forum with more than 10,000 registered users and a Web site (bringbackthesho.com) specifically devoted to convincing Ford to resurrect the SHO. The 2010 Taurus product development team spent significant time listening to SHO enthusiasts.
EcoBoost™ Twin-Turbocharged Power
The foundation of the new 2010 Taurus SHO is a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V-6 engine. This advanced powerplant generates an estimated 365 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 350 ft.-lbs. of torque at 3,500 rpm, resulting in significantly improved power, torque and fuel economy compared with larger, normally aspirated engines. This also is Ford’s most powerful EcoBoost engine.A key feature of this EcoBoost engine is gasoline direct injection. The direct injection of fuel into the cylinder during the intake stroke, as opposed to port-style injection to an externally mounted intake, produces a well-mixed air-fuel charge. Fuel vaporization during the intake stroke cools the incoming air, improving volumetric efficiency and lowers the likelihood of knock.
The results are improved throttle response, reduced cold start emissions characteristics and improved fuel economy. The cooled charge enables an increased compression ratio, improving efficiency at partial load, while the higher compression ratio allows for better volumetric efficiency under full load engine behavior. Customers will experience normally aspirated V-8 power, without compromising V-6 fuel economy.
The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 also uses twin turbochargers, as opposed to a single unit. The reduced size of each turbocharger results in reduced internal inertia, allowing this advanced engine to avoid the “turbo lag” often prevalent in earlier-generation turbocharged applications.From the driver’s seat, the rewarding result is linear power delivery across a broad torque band from 1,500 through 5,500 rpm. Peak torque building quickly off idle ensures responsive acceleration from a standing start.
SelectShift with paddle controls and All-Wheel Drive
The new Taurus SHO driveline combines a high-capacity six-speed 6F55 SelectShift transmission with a sophisticated torque-sensing All-Wheel Drive System. These components work in harmony to deliver ample traction when putting EcoBoost power on the road. The six-speed transmission offers a wide array of gears to enable spirited acceleration, yet comfortable high-speed cruising, through a 2.77 to 1 final drive ratio.SelectShift provides conventional automatic operation or a manual shift mode that gives the driver complete control over gear selection. For performance-minded drivers, paddle controls allow “match-rev” downshifts and will hold manually selected gears for precise control. Intuitively operated, a squeeze on either paddle will deliver an economical upshift under acceleration, while a gentle push forward brings a smooth downshift, synchronizing the engine and transmission speeds for responsive and positive engagement.
The Taurus SHO driveline is contemporized with the incorporation of a sophisticated All-Wheel Drive System that engages automatically and unobtrusively. The unit contains an advanced array of internal electromechanical clutches to efficiently distribute torque to the wheels with optimum traction. Standard all-wheel drive allows the Taurus SHO to efficiently deliver its high performance to the pavement under a wide variety of conditions.
“Taurus SHO suspension and steering have been sport-tuned to provide discriminating drivers with precise control, confident handling, communicative feedback and a compliant ride,” said Pete Reyes, Taurus chief engineer.
Taurus SHO features an advanced electronic power-assisted steering (EPAS) system, providing responsive road feel and enhanced on-center balance while offering the additional benefit of increased fuel economy. SHO also features a sport-tuned suspension with unique shock absorbers, springs, stabilizer bars and strut mount bushings specifically developed and harmonized to deliver the highest level of Ford DNA road holding, cornering agility and steering responsiveness available in a Blue Oval full-size sedan.
Taurus SHO takes full advantage of the multi-link SR1 rear suspension design. Named for the 1:1 shock absorber ratio, this configuration provides an inherently stable baseline for the SHO development team to fine tune for enhanced driver control and agility. In addition, the SR1 rear suspension geometry provides increased travel, while enabling the use of 19- and 20-inch wheels and tires.

The new Taurus SHO interior encourages performance driving. Leather-trimmed seats with Miko Suede inserts, made from recycled post-consumer yarns from plastic soft drink bottles, are comfortable and luxurious. A perforated leather-wrapped steering wheel puts the driver in smooth touch with the road. Front seats are 10-way power adjustable. SHO accelerator and brake pedals are trimmed in aluminum. Ford’s Entertainment Feature Leads to Safer Driving?

A recent study shows that utilization of Ford’s SYNC technologies in their cars is leading to not only safer driving, but quicker response when you do get into an accident. Ford tested 25 participants in their study with basic tasks like dialing a phone number or selecting a song via their SYNC enabled devices. Various metrics like time eyes were taken off the road and amount of distance a car swerved were measured and compared to the same tasks when not using the SYNC enabled car. The basic gist of the study shows that SYNC users never deviated from their lanes where as the non-SYNC users did so around 30% of the time.
Obviously conditions and other variables (such as others people in the car trying to chose songs or dial obscene phone lines) will cause other sorts of havoc. However, this is another data point showing that technology is in fact making our lives simpler and safer without complicating it unnecessarily. More information from Ford below:

DEARBORN, Feb. 4, 2009 – A new study shows that Ford’s SYNC hands-free system significantly reduces the level of distraction when drivers select a phone number or choose a song on their MP3 player compared with the same operations with hand-held cell phones and music players.
For example, the research conducted by Ford Motor Company shows study participants spent an average of 25 seconds with their eyes-off-the-road to select a song with a handheld MP3 player compared with 2 seconds for those choosing a song using SYNC.
Ford recently completed a driving simulator study with 25 participants who are regular SYNC users to compare driver performance and eye glance behavior effects of tasks performed using SYNC’s voice interface as compared to using nomadic devices with visual-manual interfaces.
Test participants performed seven typical tasks using SYNC’s voice interface and their personal handheld phones and music players. The tasks included dialing a 10-digit number, calling a specific person from the digital phonebook, receiving a call while driving, playing a specific song, and reviewing and responding to text messages. For each task, Ford researchers measured total eyes-off-the-road time, deviation of lane position, speed variability, and object detection response time to identify differences in attentiveness and driving performance while using basic functions.
“We know people want to stay connected in their vehicles, so Ford is continuing to deliver that connectivity for them responsibly and safely,” says Susan Cischke, Ford’s group vice president of Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering. “Our SYNC research backs up what most of us instinctively know – that it is better while driving to place a call using a voice interface than dialing manually, because you can keep your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.”
Ford’s researchers found that distraction potential for most tasks was significantly minimized when the SYNC voice interface was used as compared to the manual-entry required for handheld devices. For example, reading a text message on a handheld phone typically took the driver’s eyes off the road for 11 seconds compared to about 2 seconds when listening to the text message with SYNC’s text-to-speech output. Drivers also meandered over lane lines in more than 30 percent of trials using handheld phones and music players for song, artist, and phone book contact selection, as compared to zero percent when performing those same tasks with SYNC.
Ford’s study results are consistent with prior research, such as Virginia Tech and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s recent driving study, which followed 109 drivers for one year, including 42,300 hours of driving over two million miles. That study concluded that manually dialing a handheld device — a task that requires looks away from the road — while driving was almost 2.8 times riskier than normal driving. However, the on-the-road study showed that talking/listening on a phone while driving was no riskier than normal driving.
“These real-world results indicate that SYNC’s voice-interface offers substantial advantages compared to using a handheld device to do the same task,” says Dr. Louis Tijerina, Ford senior technical specialist.
SYNC success soars
SYNC, which recently earned Popular Mechanics’ Editor’s Choice Award for best new products at the 2009 International Consumer Electronics Show, allows consumers to connect almost any mobile phone or digital media player with their vehicle (via Bluetooth or USB connection). The driver is able to operate them by using voice commands and a steering wheel-mounted control.
The success of SYNC continues to grow. By summer 2009, Ford’s entire North American lineup will offer this technology with more than 1 million SYNC-equipped vehicles on the road by the third quarter of 2009.
Ford, working with the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, helped develop guidelines for new telematics and infotainment systems. The voluntary guidelines set limits to the eyes-off-road time required to complete visual-manual tasks. Even though SYNC is a voice-based system, its visual-manual components covered by the Alliance guidelines were tested to ensure they meet the distraction requirements.
“Ford is committed to addressing driver distraction research and testing, and implementing our findings in safety and advanced infotainment systems throughout our vehicle lines,” says John Shutko, Ford technical specialist in Human Factors and Ergonomics. “We know that customers are increasingly using telematics devices while driving their vehicles and studies show voice-activated systems like SYNC offer significant safety benefits over hand-held manual devices. If people are going to use nomadic devices, Ford Motor Company wants to offer our customers a safer way to use them, through SYNC.”
SYNC gets more safety, fuel-saving, distraction reducing features
Ford is expanding its connectivity leadership by introducing SYNC’s new 911 Assist feature that adds post-crash emergency assistance, and new traffic updates, directions and related driving information to help drivers save time and fuel while reducing distraction.
SYNC’s new “911 Assist” feature will help drivers connect with emergency assistance in the event of an air-bag deployment. When a phone is properly paired, turned on and connected to SYNC – which is designed to happen every time the driver enters the vehicle with his or her cell phone – the system will be ready to assist in placing a call to a local 911 emergency operator should an air bag-deploying accident occur.
“With SYNC, and specifically with the 911 Assist feature, we will be providing our customers an extra layer of security and peace of mind,” Cischke says.
Ford’s next-generation SYNC with Traffic, Directions and Information features leverages industry-leading voice-recognition software, integrated GPS and Bluetooth-capable phones. Debuting this spring, it will provide simple hands-free access to personalized traffic reports, precise driving directions and up-to-date information including business listings, news, sports and weather.
Customers won’t have to spend significant time with eyes off the road and hands off the wheel searching for this information on their radios, maps or other telematic devices. Driving safety can be improved when customers can retrieve this information quickly and efficiently using simple voice commands.
The new services will be available on nearly all 2010 Ford, Lincoln and Mercury models with no initial monthly subscription fees, thanks to three years of service included with a new vehicle purchase.
Another Great Import Finally Comes to the US: The Ford Transit Connect

For most of us, the van is one of the most boring vehicles on the road. Yet without them, we wouldn’t get our packages. We wouldn’t be able to haul 8-10 people in a single road trip. We wouldn’t be able to do all the work in this great land that requires us to keep our goods and our people safe from the elements while we transport from site to site. Enter the Ford Transit van. It’s smaller than your average van, but with it’s HUGE storage capacity and super efficient engine (the new Ford Transits are going to have both petrol and hybrid-electric drivetrains), the small business owner who needs a lot of hauling capacity for not a lot of bucks, will now have a new mighty horse to look at. Tool Link helps manage valuable tools and ensures that specific items are on-board and available for use. Tool Link helps to keep all RFID-tagged objects on board, so at the end of the day, these items are secure and available for work on the next job.
Crew Chief™ is a tool for fleet managers to track vehicles, staff and Transit Connect diagnostics.
This system, not available in conjunction with the in-dash computer, provides a fleet manager with constant access to vehicle location information, the ability to track vehicle performance, automatic notification of vehicle maintenance needs and the ability to let drivers drive ─ not fill out written vehicle logs.Crew Chief allows online access to vehicle location, speed, idle time, fuel usage and more than 30 diagnostic measures. Functions and reporting can be tailored to meet the specific needs of fleets large or small. Crew Chief has “geo-fencing” capability, allowing a fleet manager to set geographic or time of use boundaries.

Sexy Car Benchmark: Fisker Karma S

Although sale of the first 2010 Fisker Karma plug-in hybrids are almost a year away, the company already put together a 4-door sports convertible. The two-door folding-hardtop concept is the hottest car I’ve ever seen. Combine this with the fact that it’s got a 4-cylinder that backs up the battery cell powered electric motor and you have a winner in both performance and efficiency.

The fascia, body and shape of the car are all based off the original Karma. It supposedly does 0-60 in the same six seconds, travels up to 50 miles on battery power and averaging nearly 100 mpg (so Fisker says). Fisker also quotes the Q-Drive’s output at 403 hp and almost a over 1000 lb-ft of torque. Sexy. Fast. Green. Move this to the top of my must have list.

2010 Ford Fiesta - Redefining The HOT Hatch

Simply put, it’s one of the most exciting cars coming to the United States. What’s so excited about a Ford Fiesta (besides the fact that the car’s green)? It’s a cheap, small car that gets great gas mileage and will not break the bank. Sure, you could buy a Prius that gets 50MPG (Fiesta should be just under 50MPG), but it costs well over $20k (the Fiesta should cost under $15k base price). You could buy a Mini Cooper, but again the price savings (and the Fiesta is still a cool car that could be in the same class as the Mini) is huge and the gas mileage is as good if not better.

In the end, if Ford does bring over a non-neutered version of the Fiesta (there is a 65+ MPG version in the UK), it will surely be a smash in a time when people are becoming more energy concious. Sure, it might not be as flashy as a Prius, but it was built without the use of VERY hazardous materials like battery acid and lead other battery waste. Expect to see this car tweaked by the import tuning crowd AS SOON as it hits American shores.

With the 180 degree turn around Cadillac has pulled in the last 10 years, it’s not hard to believe other companies with the same stodgy images could do similar work for their badges. Buick is no stranger to freshening their image, with the use of Tiger Woods as their spokesperson for the last few years. However, with his huge endorsement salary having to be forgone because of the current economy, Buick will now have to depend upon exciting and solidly designed new cars. With Buick’s increasing popularity in China, among younger American’s and their increased quality, the 2010 Buick LaCross may have just pulled this feat off.

Super Cars Gone Wild: Nissan Releases GT-R SpecV

After a year of speculation and months of testing, Nissan finally has officially acknowledged the tuned version of the Nissan GT-R, the SpecV. For a mere $161,300, you get additional suspension tuning, chassis tuning and the 3.8L Twin Turbo V6 as the previous version. However, though the 3.8L has similar power, it has up rated torque and an over boost setting. While Nissan plans to produce 1,000 of the standard GT-R models worldwide a month, it can only make 20 or 30 of the Spec V cars a month. The GT-R Spec V goes on sale Feb. 2 at seven dealers in Japan, which can provide the extra maintenance services for the model. It is planned for sale later this year in Europe, but North American sales are still undecided.

Nissan Announces New GT-R SpecV Model
TOKYO (Jan. 8, 2009) — Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today announced a new limited-production Nissan GT-R SpecV model, which goes on sale at seven specially selected Nissan dealers throughout Japan on February 2, 2009. Developed around the multi-dimensional Nissan GT-R sports car, which was introduced just more than one year ago to universal global acclaim, the new SpecV model builds on the original’s “ultimate supercar that anyone can enjoy driving anywhere, at anytime” philosophy - taking it to an entirely new level of “oneness between man and machine.” The SpecV model includes unique body, interior and performance equipment and modifications, raising the GT-R’s unmatched performance to even higher levels.
The GT-R SpecV’s new exterior features include a carbon fiber rear spoiler, a carbon fiber grille, and carbon fiber brake ducts. The SpecV is available exclusively in Ultimate Black Opal (RP) body color. Inside, the SpecV’s unique two-seat interior (non-SpecV GT-R models also include a two-place rear seat) offers special Recaro carbon fiber bucket seats, while carbon fiber insets embellish the rear center storage box, instrument panel and other trim areas.

BMW xDrive 750i - Bringing 4WD Performance to the 7-Series

Hey Audi! All those A8s and S8s you’ve been selling from under us haven’t gone un-noticed. At least that’s what I imagine the board of directors at BMW has been thinking for the last 10 years. Whereas a brand like Mercedes always holds a certain elite cache with the S-class sedan, BMW, Audi and Jaguar continue to fight for drivers in search of a more sporting ride. Jaguar and BMW have held the rear wheel drive trophy and Audi has taken the sub-set of those buyers who were either living in Colorado, Alaska or wanted the extra safety of the Audi quattro system. Well, no longer will BMW let Audi steal all those cars without a fight.
The xDrive system has been in use (at least under that moniker) for a few years now and is now as robust as any other system out there (4Motion, 4Matic, etc.). It’s transition to the 7 series is an obvious evolution from the 3, 5 and X series cars. As such, the offering will be available in both short-wheel base and of course, long-wheel base, but it will not be available in the low-end petrol and diesel models.
With a 30:70 front:rear bias, the typical RWD driving feeling will stay, while the xDrive contributes to better traction & handling in slippery conditions. The new 7 Series is showing that in areas of design, engineering and innovation that will show evolution above and beyond most other full sized luxury sedans. It’s design goes back towards the mainstream with a lack of such dramatic “flame surfaces” in the previous model and a more agressive look and stance. No doubt, this will be the best 7er we’ve seen from BMW.

2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid: Top Mid-sized Hybrid in the USA

With an EPA rating of 41 MPG in the city and 36 MPG in the hightway, the 2010 Ford Fusion is now the most fuel efficient mid-sized sedan in the USA. The previous title holder, the Toyota Camry Hybrid, was bested by 8 MPG and 2 MPG in city and highway driving (respectively). Maybe this is one of the reasons Ford isn’t in as bad shape as the rest of the domestic car makers. While GM is glitzing all over the Volt and Chrysler is busying taking out full page ads in the Wall Street Journal, Ford is actually building cars Americans want. The Prius is proof there is demand for these cars when gas prices go up. Right now, it may be a little harder to push these cars as gas (at least here in GA) is around $1.44 a gallon. However, for those who are looking at a mid-sized car and wants to be buy a domestic hybrid, the choice is simple (and when gas moves its way back up, the rest of the population will have a good reason to ask themselves, “Have I driven a Ford lately?”)
DEARBORN, Mich., Dec. 23, 2008 – The all-new Ford Fusion Hybrid is now officially America’s most fuel efficient mid-size car with a certified 41 mpg rating in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, topping the Toyota Camry hybrid by 8 mpg in the city and 2 mpg on the highway.
“The new Ford Fusion Hybrid not only significantly exceeds the competition but also embodies Ford’s 100 percent commitment to fuel efficiency leadership, quality, innovation and advanced technology,” said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development. “The Ford team set the bar high – to develop America’s most fuel efficient mid-size sedan – and that’s what they delivered.”
The 2010 Ford Fusion’s final fuel economy certification was completed this week at Ford’s testing laboratories in Allen Park, Mich., and the vehicle will carry an EPA label of 41 mpg for city driving and 36 mpg on the highway when it goes on sale this spring. The Fusion Hybrid, which beats even the much smaller Honda Civic hybrid by 1 mpg in city driving, can travel more than 700 miles on a single tank of gas.
To deliver the class leading fuel economy performance, Ford’s engineers spent the past three years developing in-house the vehicle’s next-generation hybrid propulsion system. It allows the Fusion and Mercury Milan hybrid to travel up to 47 miles per hour in pure electric mode, faster than the Toyota Camry and all other hybrids currently on the road. In addition, the system’s Advanced Intake Variable Cam Timing allows the Fusion and Milan hybrids to more seamlessly transition from gas to electric mode and vice-versa.
“The Fusion Hybrid’s ability to run at a much higher speed in electric mode allows drivers to maximize fuel efficiently in many driving situations,” said Praveen Cherian, Fusion Hybrid program leader. “For example, this would allow drivers to travel around their subdivision and parking areas in all-electric mode.”
Fusion’s advanced hybrid system features:
* Smaller, lighter nickel-metal hydride battery, which produces 20 percent more power than Ford’s previous hybrid system. The battery’s improved chemistry allows it to be run at a higher temperature and cooled using cabin air.
* New 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine (155 horsepower / 136 lb.-ft. of torque), which is mated to an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission.
* Enhanced electronic throttle control, which reduces airflow on shutdowns, reducing fueling needs on restarts.
* Smart climate control system, which monitors cabin temperature and only runs the gas engine as needed to heat the cabin. It also includes an electric air conditioning compressor to further minimize engine use.
* Regenerative brake system, which captures the energy normally lost through friction in braking and stores it. Nearly 94 percent energy recovery is achieved by delivering full regenerative braking, which means only 6 percent of braking is through traditional friction brakesSmartGauge Teaches Eco-Driving
The new Fusion Hybrid literally teaches drivers how to make the most out of their vehicle, thanks to Ford’s SmartGauge with EcoGuide. SmartGauge is a unique instrument cluster that helps coach drivers on how to optimize the performance of their hybrid.SmartGauge with EcoGuide features two, high-resolution, full-color liquid crystal display screens on either side of the vehicle’s speedometer. The screens can be configured to show different levels of driver information, including fuel and battery power levels, and average and instant miles-per-gallon.
When set in tutorial mode, the instrument panel “grows” leaves and vines on-screen to reward fuel-efficient driving. The more leaves and vines that appear, the more efficient the driving behavior is and the more fuel is being saved. In some recent tests, automotive journalists have reported exceeding 50 mpg with the Fusion Hybrid.
The Ford Fusion Hybrid also is distinct on the outside with Ford’s “road and leaf” badges on both sides and the rear, unique 17-inch, eight-spoke wheels, and a unique engine cover. On the inside, Fusion Hybrid features eco-friendly seat fabric made from post-industrial 100 percent recycled materials and a standard 110-volt power outlet.
Fusion Gasoline Model Also a Fuel Leader
In addition to the hybrid, Fusion will be offered with three fuel-efficient gasoline engines – the Duratec 2.5-liter I-4 and enhanced 3.0-liter flex-fuel V-6 and 3.5-liter V-6 Duratec engines. Fusions equipped with the 2.5-liter I-4 engine are expected to deliver at least 3 mpg better on the highway than the Honda Accord and 2 mpg better than the Toyota Camry. The new Fusion will be building off the strong quality reputation of the current model, which has gained important third-party accolades, and will offer class-exclusive features, including Ford SYNC™, SIRIUS® TravelLink™, BLIS™ (Blind Spot Information System) with Cross Traffic Alert and Sony-branded audio.In addition to the Fusion, several other Ford vehicles are fuel-economy standouts on the road today.
